OBEN Board of Education Appoints a New Head Custodian

The Oyster Bay East Norwich Board of Education held its monthly Work Session meeting on Tuesday, December 6 at 7:30 pm in the OBHS Library.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laura Seinfeld turned to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Dr. Lisa Mulhall to introduce the Supervisor of the Science and Technology Departments Janna Ostroff who, with the help of Vernon Teachers Ms. Pat Murray and Ms. Meagan Rogus updated the Board on the Elementary STEM (Science & Technology) program.

Some business items were dealt with, including the appointment of a new Head Custodian at the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School to fill the vacancy of retiring Head Custodian, Mr. Bill Arians.

Mr. Arians began his career in Oyster Bay as a night custodian in 1992.  In 2000, Mr. Arians became the head custodian at the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School.  He is retiring as of the end of this month.

Mr. Arians plans on moving to Florida to help his sister care for his aging parents.  Mr. Arians always had a positive attitude and was very caring of OBEN’s youngest students.  He will be missed.

Mr. Wayne Placella has been given the nod to fill the position.  Mr. Placella graduated from Oyster Bay High School in 1996.  While at the High School Mr. Placella was a celebrated drummer featured in the Talent Shows and events as a member of a rockin’ band playing original music.

Mr. Placella stayed in Oyster Bay-East Norwich and started a family.  He has two children, a boy and a girl, who are currently students at the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School.  Mr. Placella is involved in the community as well.  He currently is serving as the Chief of the East Norwich Fire Department.

Music is still a big part of his life, as Mr. Placella runs a successful DJ business.

Please note that the January 3 Board of Education Work Session has been cancelled.  The topics scheduled for discussion at that meeting will be addressed in the Tuesday, January 17 Business Meeting.

The next Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 20 at 7:30 pm in the OBHS Library.  The 2017-18 Budget process will begin.  All are welcome.
