The OBHS Newspaper, "The Harbour Voice" was awarded a silver medalist certificate by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association September 2008

Students

Olivia Kaplan -"Commanding Officer, 2nd Precinct for a Day" - from the Police Commissioner For-A-Day essay contest. She was honored at a reception at the Nassau County Police Headquarters Assembly Hall on 4/24/07.

Julia Kellogg, honorable mention for  "Autumn's Portrait" in the 2007 Nancy Thorp Poetry contest sponsored by the English Department at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia

Sara Gershon, 2nd place, Kenneth F. Gambone Writing Contest, will be honored at LILAC's awards luncheon at the Milleridge Inn on 5/18/07

Julia Kellogg, gr.11, and Alexandra Zajaczkowski, gr. 12, honorable mention, Letters About Literature contest, 2 of 150 honorable mentions from 1300 entries

Fiona Brunner, honorable mention, from the Irish Cultural Society of Garden City Area for writing an interior monologue expressing the thoughts of an Irish soldier fighting for the British army in WW I.

Peter Bertoli - grade 12 - Knights Templar essay contest winner. Invited to present essay at Theodore Roosevelt observance on 4/28/07.

Danielle Bloom -grade 12- Martin Luther King essay contest - 2nd place in Nassau County -monetary award to be sent to her college toward tuition payment

2 Newsday awards: 2nd place - editorial cartooning - Chris Belfiore

3rd place-local news reporting -Mary Miller

Chris Belfiore- honorable mention -editorial cartoon -received at the Adelphi Quill Awards ceremony

Courtney Collins, Mariela Napolitano and Arielle Edelheit had poems published in the 2006 edition of Teacher's Selection: Anthology of Eighth Grade Poetry.

The following students from OBHS received 2006 Long Island Press High School Journalism awards. They were honored at a dinner at the Sheraton Long Island Hotel on 6/13/06.

   2nd place - best feature package- Sharon Burke, Marissa Kenn, Nina Paddu -", Focus on Eating Disorders"
   2nd place - best Katrina coverage- Will Campbel- "Retired Teacher Aids Hurricane Victims in Houma, Louisiana Following Hurricane Katrina"
   2nd place - best national news analysis- Justin Nakrin -"Combination of Factors Spike Gas Prices"
   2nd place - best point/counterpoint - Jason Lim/Sarah Schoenbrg -"Collection"
   2nd place - best high school issues story - Danielle Gershon -"District Fails to Meet NCLB Standard"
   3rd place - best student profile - Kevin Shayani -"Student Journeys to America"

    Dan Horowitz, grade 9, "Destiny Fulfilled"
    Nicole Sandler, grade 9, "Home is Where the Heart Is" and
    Suzanne Sommerhalter, grade 11, "The Beginning of a Journey".
Their teacher is Marjorie Vigliotti.

Jaime Frydman, a junior, placed 3rd in The Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest that was held at Sagamore Hill on 5/4/06. She has also been invited to present this speech at 2pm on July 4, 2006 on the porch of Sagamore Hill during their holiday celebration. Additionally, Jaimie won the 2006 Knights Templar essay contest with a version of this presentation.

The School Journalism program is an annual competition. A reception for all winners will be held at Newsday on May 15.
 

The following students received awards at the North Shore Young Authors' Conference and Competition that was held at Locust Valley High School on Friday, 4/7/06:
Holly Relyea -1st place for personal narrative
Lauren Victory - 3rd place for personal narrative
Jillian Capewell - 3rd place for short poetry
Jason Lim - 1st place for journalism editorial
Mary Miller - 2nd place for long fiction
Nina Paddu - honorable mention for personal narrative
Emily Abbate -honorable mention for personal narrative.
Ms. Kathy Reilly organized the student trip to the conference.
 

Adelphi University High School Press Day Quill Award -Honorable Mention to Chris Belfiore for illustration. Chris is a member of the Harbour Voice staff.

Agapae, the High School literary magazine won a Gold Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, affiliated with the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University.

The Harbour Voice received a gold medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
