SPRING PARP 2008

PARENTS AS READING PARTNERS

OBEN ELEMENTARY PTA

THEODORE ROOSEVELT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

OYSTER BAY, NEW YORK

Dear Roosevelt Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to PARP!

(Parents As Reading Partners)

Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child’s education.

In 1987 the New York State PTA assumed the lead of the PARP program.  Since then, PARP committee volunteers have worked to emphasize the importance of a reading partnership between the home and the school.  Children look to their parents as role models.  They will learn from them the importance of reading for both information and fun.  In addition, reading at home serves to supplement the excellent reading programs currently used in our nation’s schools.  By working together, parents and teachers can surely give our children a wonderful gift – the love of reading!

Parents As Reading Partners is a program designed to foster a lifelong love of reading in children.  It also hopes to strengthen the family bond.  One of the ways it does this is by encouraging parents/guardians to read at home with their children for at least 15 minutes per day.

If anyone has special thoughts about our Parents As Reading Partners activities, we invite you to share them with us!  Mrs. Davidson, our librarian, will happily accept them and they will be posted on our webpage!

Joanna Herman, a 2nd grader in Ms. Skoczdopole’s class writes:

PARP is one of my favorite library activities.  Ever since I was in Kindergarten I loved PARP!  Every year as I’m coming to school I think “what’s the PARP theme going to be this year?”  Also, every time during PARP I go to the library, even when it’s not a special.  I love the library!  When PARP starts it’s an opportunity for you, your mom, your dad, and anyone else in your family to read together.  So come, get a good book, and sit down and bury yourself in it!!

Please check out our web site for further updates…Enjoy reading 15 minutes per day
