“Brilliant Beginnings”

Theodore Roosevelt School possesses remarkable individuals.  Our students have learned to strive for the best of which they are capable.  We at Roosevelt School believe in “Brilliant Beginnings.”  Every student here is experiencing the brilliant beginning of his/her educational journey.

There is continuous emphasis on literacy development which is achieved through collaboration with Teachers College, Columbia University.  Each classroom participates in numerous literacy celebrations, highlighting the reading and writing skills of each student, including Reader’s Theatre and Writers’ Breakfasts.  Parents are invited to share in these presentations that celebrate student accomplishment.

Students in grades K-2 take part in extensive, inquiry-based Math, Science, Technology (MST) activities with a science specialist. Problem solving and creative thinking are emphasized.   Also, inquiry –based science kits are used at the K– 2 level.  Our students’ work is displayed for parents, friends and the community at Roosevelt’s school wide science fair.

Our music and art program is one of the finest on L.I.  “Music and the Brain” has been successfully implemented at our building.  It is a keyboard based program that teaches a variety of musical skills and has been shown to enhance students’ ability to master math and reading.  The children learn the basics of music (melody, rhythm, tempo and dynamics) as they learn basic piano skills.  Each child works on his/her individual keyboard.

Our young artists at Roosevelt study such artists as Monet, Picasso, O’Keefe as well as different types of art - cubism, abstract art, color mixing and many other dimensions that instill in students a love and respect for the arts.    Our students’ work is displayed for parents, friends and the community at Roosevelt’s school wide art gallery.  Student projects are often displayed throughout the community.

Through our Foreign Language Exploration program, dynamic and engaging instruction and activities will provide students in grades K-2 an exposure to the Spanish and French languages and cultures.

We have an ongoing assessment of our instructional programs and our students’ success. Student portfolios are maintained throughout the school year, with data used to guide instructional decision-making, as well as to increase student achievement.

Not long ago we celebrated the completion of six new classrooms, science/computer lab – which includes 12 student computers, a mounted Smart Board and projector, digital cameras, as well Intel computer microscopes. We now have two learning centers as well as the renovation of the existing building. But, if you ask our students they will tell that the new library is their favorite place in the whole world.  Our library’s nautical theme captures the essence of our school by the bay.

All students in kindergarten through second grade use laptops which are integrated into the curriculum.  We are thrilled to use Smart Boards throughout the building to enhance our instruction and integrate technology.

Theodore Roosevelt School received an award from the NYS English Council for having a program of excellence in ELA. We were honored with this award for having one of the strongest literacy programs in NYS and commended on how we celebrate readers and writers.

The energy, enthusiasm and talents are all evident in the students, teachers and parents.  Our Site Based Team, who were responsible for our new playground, and our dedicated PTA provide enormous support to our efforts through fund raising and student/parent/staff activities.

We welcome your interest in our school and encourage you to contact us via telephone or e-mail if you have further questions.
