About

“Brilliant Beginnings”

Theodore Roosevelt School possesses remarkable individuals – motivated students, dedicated staff members and incredibly involved parents.  Our students learn to strive for the best of which they are capable.  We at Roosevelt School believe in “Brilliant Beginnings.”  Every student here is experiencing the brilliant beginning of his/her educational journey.

There is continuous emphasis on literacy development which is achieved through collaboration with Teachers College, Columbia University.  Each classroom participates in numerous literacy celebrations, highlighting the reading and writing skills of each student, including Reader’s Theatre and Writing Celebrations. Parents are invited to share in these presentations that celebrate student accomplishment.

Students in grades K-2 take part in extensive, inquiry-based Math, Science, Technology (MST) activities taught by their classroom teachers and our science/technology specialist.   Problem solving and creative thinking are emphasized.  Our students’ work is displayed for parents, friends and the community at our school wide science fair.

All students in kindergarten through second grade use laptops which are integrated into the curriculum.  We are thrilled to use Smart Boards throughout the building to enhance our instruction and integrate technology.

Our music and art program is one of the finest on L.I.  “Music and the Brain” has been successfully implemented at our building.  It is a keyboard based program that teaches a variety of musical skills and has been shown to enhance students’ ability to master math and reading.  The children learn the basics of music (melody, rhythm, tempo and dynamics) as they learn basic piano skills.  Each child works on his/her individual keyboard.

Our young artists at Roosevelt study such artists as Monet, Picasso, and O’Keefe, as well as different types of art - cubism, abstract art, color mixing and many other dimensions that instill in students a love and respect for the arts.    Our students’ work is displayed for parents, friends and the community at Theodore Roosevelt’s school wide art gallery.

We have ongoing assessment of our instructional programs and our students’ success.  Student portfolios are maintained throughout the school year, with data used to guide instructional decision-making, as well as to increase student achievement.

Not long ago we celebrated the completion of six new classrooms (our kindergarten wing), the addition of our science/technology lab – which includes student computers, a Smart Board, digital cameras, Intel computer microscopes and video conferencing equipment and the renovation of one of our favorite places here at Roosevelt - our library.  Our library’s nautical theme captures the essence of our school by the bay.

Energy, enthusiasm and talents are all evident in the students, teachers and parents.  Our dedicated PTA provides enormous support of our efforts through fund raising and student/parent/staff activities.

We welcome your interest in our school and encourage you to contact us if you have further questions.
