ASL Students Build Creative Towns to Showcase Language Skills

Students in Dr. Sisia's ASL I class at Oyster Bay High School recently combined art and American Sign Language as they created and presented their own imaginary towns—entirely in ASL.
In just five short months, these signing students learned to identify buildings, describe their locations in relation to each other, and name the streets in their towns. The assignment allowed their creativity to shine as they designed communities inspired by their personal interests, including towns themed around Stranger Things, Fortnite, favorite foods, candy and ballparks.
The project demonstrates how language learning becomes more engaging when students can connect new vocabulary to topics they're passionate about. By building and presenting their custom towns, Dr. Sisia's students showed off their growing fluency while having fun with the material.
Amazing work, ASL rockstars!
