OBHS Sophomores Tackle Global Issues in AP Seminar Presentations

Last week, Oyster Bay High School sophomores demonstrated their academic chops in a high-stakes setting – presenting original research as part of their AP Seminar performance-based exam.
The presentations were no small feat. Each student developed a complex, multi-perspective argument drawing on a synthesis of more than forty peer-reviewed articles spanning a wide range of academic disciplines. Topics reflected some of the most pressing issues facing the world today, including the effects of AI technologies on global healthcare development, the regulation of autonomous weapons and strategies for mitigating the adverse health effects of GMOs.
The work behind each presentation was months in the making. Over the course of two months, students engaged in deep reading, rigorous writing and close collaboration with their peers – all in service of building arguments worthy of the collegiate-level course.
AP Seminar is part of the College Board's AP Capstone program, a sequence designed to cultivate the research, analytics and communication skills students need to thrive beyond high school. At OBHS, these presentations stand as a testament to what sophomores are capable of when given the opportunity to engage with real, complex problems.
We are incredibly proud of these students and the work they put into their presentations!
