Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School hosts Social Studies Night for first graders

First graders and their families gathered at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in Oyster Bay on the evening of Mar. 19 for a hands-on Social Studies Night, exploring a range of activities designed to bring the curriculum to life.
Organized by Principal Devra Small and Elementary Curriculum Associate Jennifer Capogna, the event brought together teachers from multiple grade levels to lead engaging sessions throughout the building. Students from Oyster Bay High School’s chapter of the Rho Kappa Honor Society were also on hand, assisting with activities and helping the evening run smoothly.
The night kicked off in the multi-purpose room with group activities before families spread out to individual classrooms, where a variety of stations awaited. Young learners tested their geography skills with a U.S. map puzzle, got creative crafting teddy bears from washcloths, and connected with the natural world by exploring materials such as horseshoe crab shells, birds' nests, and pinecones. They then took the experience a step further by planting grass seeds to take home. Social studies bingo rounded out the classroom activities, keeping the fun and learning going throughout the evening.
The night also had a musical moment, as students made their way to the music room to sing patriotic songs, including a special viewing of Taylor Swift performing the national anthem.
Adding a meaningful community connection to the evening, a representative from the Theodore Roosevelt Association was present to collect donations in support of Teddy Bears for Kids, tying the night's creative activity back to the school's storied namesake.
