Oyster Bay High School Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Cultural Festivities

Oyster Bay High School wrapped up Hispanic Heritage Month with a lively celebration of Hispanic culture and traditions on Oct. 16. Organized by the school's Spanish teachers, the event transformed the Innovation Lab into a festive gathering space where students could explore cultural traditions, participate in hands-on activities and enjoy time with friends during their lunch periods.
The Middle School Art Club hosted a table featuring handcrafted jewelry and textiles from Latin and South America. Students also enjoyed a variety of arts and crafts, including making tissue paper poinsettias, flowers native to Mexico that hold special significance during Las Posadas, a traditional nine-day Christmas celebration. Other activities included decorating colorful skulls inspired by Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and playing a spirited round of Spanish BINGO.
Adding to the festivities, ENL teacher Ms. Duque-Cuniglio demonstrated traditional salsa dance moves, while a special display celebrated the school's own Hispanic heritage. The poster featured photographs of Oyster Bay High School's Hispanic faculty and staff members, each proudly holding the flag of their country of origin.
The celebration provided a fitting conclusion to Hispanic Heritage Month, bringing students and staff together for an afternoon of cultural appreciation, creativity and school pride.
