Alumni Spotlight: Greg Davis, Class of 1975

From Oyster Bay High School to the United States Marine Corps, alumnus Greg Davis has built a life defined by service, perseverance and a willingness to forge his own path. In honor of Veterans Day, the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District is proud to recognize Mr. Davis in its November Alumni Spotlight, celebrating his distinguished military and federal intelligence career and the lasting influence of his years at Oyster Bay High School.
A 1975 graduate, Mr. Davis recently retired after more than 40 years of federal service, including a career as a Marine Corps officer and senior counterterrorism intelligence analyst. His journey took him from the athletic fields of Oyster Bay to military service during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and eventually to a career in national security.
Looking back, Mr. Davis credits his experiences at Oyster Bay High School with helping him develop the confidence, discipline and determination that guided him throughout his life.
An accomplished student-athlete, Mr. Davis served as co-captain of the football team, competed on the championship fencing team and ran long-distance events in track. He also represented Oyster Bay High School in the Long Island High School Athlete Olympics. Beyond athletics, he was president of the senior high school band, where he played first alto saxophone, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of Oyster Bay's historic Boy Scout Troop 39, founded by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Mr. Davis remembers the many coaches and mentors who shaped his character, including coaches Grandy, Rose, D'Ricco, Pepe, Peterson, Robie and Halaz, music teacher Mr. Luckinbill and Scoutmaster Dave Layton. Together, they taught him the importance of teamwork, perseverance and mentoring younger students.
One particularly meaningful connection came full circle when Mr. Davis was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps at Sagamore Hill. He invited Mr. Layton, his former Scoutmaster, to receive his first salute as an officer, presenting him with the traditional silver dollar given to the person who renders that honor.
After graduation, Mr. Davis enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island, before entering the United States Naval Academy as a member of the Class of 1980, the first class to admit women. He continued his athletic pursuits, playing football and rowing crew.
Mr. Davis later transferred to Ohio State University, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Along the way, he joined Sigma Chi fraternity and supported himself through college by working as a model and actor.
After graduation, Mr. Davis joined the United States Marine Corps, becoming an artillery officer and serving in combat during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He later served as an intelligence officer with the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion at Camp Pendleton, California.
His career also took a few unexpected turns outside the military. While stationed in Southern California, Mr. Davis pursued acting, appearing in films, commercials and the television series “Renegade,” eventually becoming a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
In 1997, Mr. Davis began a full-time career in federal intelligence, first with the Marine Corps Intelligence Activity and later with the Office of Naval Intelligence. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 2016 as a lieutenant colonel and concluded his federal career on Jan. 1, 2026, as a senior counterterrorism analyst.
Despite the many directions his life has taken, Mr. Davis still draws on the lessons he learned growing up in Oyster Bay. When asked what his school years gave him that he still carries today, his answer was simple: "Supreme confidence in myself and my abilities as I move forward in life."
He also encourages today's students to recognize that their futures do not need to follow a perfectly planned route.
"Know that not knowing what you want to do as a career is normal," Mr. Davis said. "Go to college and have fun learning about yourself."
Having recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of his high school graduation, Mr. Davis also reflected on the importance of maintaining connections and expressing gratitude to the people who shape our lives.
"Let people know how much you care about them while you can, especially your teachers," he said. "Let them know now how important they were in influencing your life."
For Mr. Davis, a lifetime of military and public service has reinforced the values first instilled in him by his family, teachers, coaches and mentors. His story is a reminder that success is not always measured by following the path originally planned, but by the character, resilience and sense of purpose demonstrated along the way.
As the district recognizes Veterans Day this November, Oyster Bay-East Norwich is proud to honor Greg Davis for his service to the nation and to celebrate the enduring connection between its alumni and the community that helped shape them.
