On Oct. 17, students at James H. Vernon School in Oyster Bay were treated to an exciting and inspiring assembly featuring Corey “The Dribbler” Rich, a former Harlem Globetrotter known for his dazzling basketball tricks and motivational speaking. The event kicked off the school’s celebration of Red Ribbon Week, an annual campaign that promotes healthy, drug-free living.
Corey captivated students with his impressive dribbling skills, performing a variety of basketball tricks that had everyone cheering. But beyond the entertainment, Corey’s message to the students was clear: making healthy choices, being kind to others, and taking care of yourself are the keys to a successful and fulfilling life. Throughout the assembly, Corey shared personal stories and examples that emphasized the importance of working hard, respecting oneself and others, and spreading kindness.
Red Ribbon Week is a national initiative that started in 1985 to raise awareness about the dangers of drug use and to encourage youth to commit to living drug-free lives. Schools across the country participate in the week-long event with various activities and educational programs aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle. This year's theme at James H. Vernon School is all about making positive choices, and Corey’s assembly set the tone for a week of reflection, learning, and fun activities centered around self-care and respect.
