At the Board of Education meeting on June 4th at Oyster Bay High School, recognition was given to the National French and Spanish exam medalists, winners of the Chinese Language Association of Secondary Schools National Poster Contest, and the winners of the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association 38th Annual Student Poetry Contest

This year, over 44,000 students across the United States participated in the National French Exam, Le Grand Concours, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Three of the nation’s finest French students attend school in Oyster Bay. Isidora Accornero and Delmy Zavala Chicas were both silver medalists for level 2, and Rose Lindstrom was awarded a bronze medal in level 4.

This year's National Spanish Exam, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish, was administered to over 80,000 students nationally. Eight Oyster Bay students were awarded medals: Liana Altamirano, Jake Coutinho, William Nobel, Aari Gupta, Leonel Soto and Caitlin Dias.

Five students from James H. Vernon School entered the CLASS 3rd Annual National Poster Contest, and they achieved impressive results, earning one gold, two silver, and one bronze award in the grades 6-8 category. The theme of the contest was My Favorite Chinese Character, and each student selected and illustrated the meaning of their favorite Chinese character. Award winners were: Ioanna Kokotos, Lilian McEvoy, Aubrey Morra, Kaitlynn Chang and Annemarie Cochran.

Sophia Sophos and Chrysta Thomas, both 9th grade Mandarin students at Oyster Bay High School, won Silver Awards at the CLASS 2024 National Poster Contest in Grades 9-12 category. Their requirement was to create a poster for a Chinese character that helps Chinese language learners to memorize the character.

The theme of the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association 38th Annual Student Poetry Contest was “Song of the Open Road”. Dr. Faughey’s 11th grade fourth period students won the Grand Champion Award for their class anthology, “The Next Road.”

The following students were recognized for their individual entries: Jackson Kelly, Sophia Guerrero, Jack Sapienza, Michael Olivero, Connor Walsh, Alexa Laurencon, Jane Gurney, Adrian Kim, Rose Lindstrom and Anastasia Sakellis.
