The James H. Vernon School recently unveiled significant facility improvements, a highlight of the 2021 bond initiative. The most notable enhancement is the addition of a brand new music wing, which includes a state-of-the-art band room, orchestra room, instrument storage and a general music classroom. These upgrades mark a major step forward in providing students with a modern, well-equipped environment to nurture their musical talents. Alongside this, the school’s cafeteria has also been renovated, creating a more inviting and functional space for students and staff.

The new music wing is the centerpiece of the renovations at Vernon School, designed to meet the growing needs of the district's award-winning music program. Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District was named one of the nation’s best districts for music education by the NAMM Foundation in 2024, a recognition that reflects the district’s commitment to arts education.

The Vernon School music facilities were meticulously planned to enhance the overall learning experience for students in grades 3 through 6. The new band and orchestra rooms are equipped with flexible rehearsal areas, improved acoustics and modern technology that supports a range of musical activities and learning styles.

I am thrilled to see how the new music wing at Vernon is continuing to elevate and support our music program, said Erica Giglio Pac, the district’s Director of Fine, Performing and Media Arts. These state-of-the-art facilities provide our students with an inspiring environment to explore their musical talents, collaborate and grow. The improved acoustics, flexible rehearsal areas and modern technology support a variety of learning experiences, enabling us to enhance music education across the grade levels. It’s exciting to witness how it is already fostering creativity and a deeper passion for music among our students.

The music program at Vernon has long been a source of pride for the district, with students regularly participating in the New York State School Music Association and earning top honors. The new facilities further support this tradition of excellence, offering students a professional-grade space to hone their skills. Vernon Principal Anastasia Smith noted the importance of these new resources, saying, “The amazing new music suite encourages creativity, and students appreciate having a dedicated space to explore various musical genres, fostering their passion and creativity. Our musical ensembles now have their own classrooms to practice in, making them feel appreciated by their school community and giving them a sense of pride.”

In addition to the music wing, the school’s cafeteria has undergone a transformation. The renovated space is designed to be more inviting and functional, with seating arrangements that encourage both social interaction and comfort. Students now have access to booths and semicircular banquettes, creating a warm, welcoming environment for meals and gatherings. The cafeteria renovation created a modern, flexible seating for the students to enjoy their lunch,” added Principal Smith. “Students feel like they’re out dining at a restaurant during lunch! They enjoy gathering in a vibrant cafeteria, leading to laughter, conversations, and stronger friendships.” These spaces not only enhance the physical environment but also contribute to a vibrant school culture that students genuinely enjoy.

The renovations at Vernon School are part of a district-wide effort funded by the 2021 bond, which included improvements across all three school campuses. Beyond the music wing and cafeteria, ongoing upgrades are being made to the Butler building and the addition of new ground storage facilities will enhance the efficiency of the building and grounds department.

Additionally, several safety and infrastructure improvements have been implemented, which include new safety glass partitions in the main office, upgraded door hardware throughout the building and the installation of a natural-gas leak detection system.

“The new facilities at Vernon are already making a positive impact on our students’ learning experience, giving them the space and tools they need to thrive,” Giglio Pac added. “I am so grateful to our Board of Education, Dr. Ianni, Ms. Raynor, and the community who helped to make this possible.”
